Biography

Mike Stack, Pennsylvania’s 33rd Lieutenant Governor, was elected in November 2014 and was inaugurated along with Governor Tom Wolf on January 20, 2015.

As Lt. Gov., he is the presiding officer of the Pennsylvania Senate. He also chairs the Board of Pardons, and was appointed by Gov. Wolf to chair the Pennsylvania Emergency Management Council. He is a member of the Pennsylvania Military Community Enhancement Commission and was chosen chairman by the other commissioners. He also chairs the Local Government Advisory Commission.

Lt. Gov. Stack served as a Captain in the Pennsylvania Army National Guard and is a graduate of the U.S. Armed Forces Officers Basic Course.

He was in the middle of his fourth state Senate term when he was elected Lt. Governor, representing a district that included Northeast Philadelphia, Bridesburg, and portions of Port Richmond and Juniata Park, from 2001 through the beginning of 2015.

As a Senator, he was the Democratic Chair of the Banking and Insurance Committee and a member of the Aging and Youth, Communications and Technology, Judiciary, Local Government, and Policy committees. He has been a leading advocate for seniors, education, health care, and job creation, and was a strong voice for economic sanctions against Iran and Sudan.

Lt. Gov. Stack earned his law degree from Villanova University Law School in 1992. He is a graduate of LaSalle College High School and of LaSalle University.

He is admitted to the Maryland and Pennsylvania Bar Associations.

During the Administration of Gov. Robert P. Casey, he was Executive Deputy Director of the Pennsylvania Medical Professional Liability Catastrophic Loss Fund.

He is a member of the Philadelphia Board of City Trusts, co-chair of the Philadelphia Veterans’ Court Advisory Committee, and a Fellow of The University of Pennsylvania Leadership Academy of the Fels Institute of Government. He serves on the Board of Trustees of Temple University. He is also a member of the Chilean & American Chamber of Commerce of Greater Philadelphia, Officer Daniel Boyle Division 88 Chapter of the Ancient Order of Hibernians, and Shaare Shamayim Men’s Club.

Lt. Gov. Stack comes from a family committed to public service. His grandfather, an immigrant from Ireland, became a U.S. Congressman in the 1930s and co-sponsored the first minimum wage and Social Security bills. His father, Michael Stack Jr., was an attorney, author, law professor, and Democratic ward leader. His mother, retired Judge Felice Stack, served on the Philadelphia Board of Education prior to becoming a Philadelphia Municipal Court judge.

Lt. Gov. Stack is married to the former Tonya Whitmore and has a stepson Justin.
